Kalakshetra alumna · Performer · Teacher · Founder, Kalpavruksha School of Fine Arts

"Bharatanatyam is not simply a dance — it is a path of self-knowledge, offered through the body, expressed through devotion, and perfected through years of disciplined practice."
— Smt. Deepa Sadasivam

A life dedicated to the art

Smt. Deepa Sadasivam's journey in Bharatanatyam began in early childhood, rooted in the classical soil of the Kalakshetra tradition. She pursued her formal training at the Kalakshetra Foundation, Chennai — one of India's foremost institutions for classical arts, established by the legendary Rukmini Devi Arundale.

Under the direct tutelage of accomplished gurus within the Kalakshetra lineage, Deepa mastered the full spectrum of Bharatanatyam — from the architectural precision of adavus to the soulful depth of abhinaya. The Kalakshetra bani is recognised for its distinctive aesthetic: refined, devotional, and deeply rooted in the Natyashastra.

After completing her training, Deepa built a reputation as a compelling solo performer, presenting Bharatanatyam recitals at sabhas and cultural festivals across Tamil Nadu. Her performances are marked by the hallmarks of the Kalakshetra style — impeccable technique, luminous stage presence, and abhinaya of extraordinary emotional depth.

She began sharing her expertise as a faculty member in an outreach capacity from 2012, sharing her knowledge at various institutions. In 2014, driven by a vision to give students a dedicated space of authentic classical learning, she founded Kalpavruksha School of Fine Arts in Kodambakkam, Chennai.

Teaching philosophy

Deepa's teaching is guided by the guru-shishya parampara — the ancient tradition of direct, personal transmission from teacher to student. Each correction is specific to each body, each temperament, each student's unique path.

She teaches in Tamil and English, making classical dance accessible to students from diverse backgrounds — treating Bharatanatyam not just as technique, but as theory, mythology, music, and the philosophical underpinnings of the Natyashastra. Students leave Kalpavruksha not merely as dancers, but as informed, thoughtful artists who understand the tradition they carry forward.

The Kalakshetra lineage

The Kalakshetra tradition traces its origins to Rukmini Devi Arundale, who dedicated her life to restoring Bharatanatyam to its classical dignity.
